Requirements

All participating music systems must be connected to the local network for sonoro Multiroom®. First prepare the cabling, check the network settings and then set up the sonoro audio App.

Connect music systems via LAN

  1. Connect each participating music system to a network switch using a Cat 6 or higher Ethernet cable.
  2. Connect the switch to your router.
  3. Check that the LAN connection is established on the music systems.

Audio connection: All music systems connect to the router via the switch using LAN cables.

LAN is required

Music systems connected only via Wi-Fi cannot be added to a sonoro Multiroom® group. Your mobile device uses Wi-Fi for control; audio transmission between the music systems uses LAN.

Prepare the router and switch

The router and switch must support multicast. Use a gigabit switch with 1 Gbit/s and enable IGMP snooping.

Setting What to check
Gigabit Ethernet The switch supports a transmission speed of 1 Gbit/s.
Multicast The router and switch support transmission to multiple recipients.
IGMP snooping The switch supports this feature and it is enabled. It directs audio data specifically to the required participants.
Quality of Service (QoS) Where available, we recommend prioritising audio data on the router or switch.

Names and settings vary by manufacturer and model. Refer to your router or switch manual for setup instructions.

Professional network setup

If necessary, have a qualified specialist carry out the installation. Larger installations may benefit from separate network segments or dedicated switches for audio applications. Heavy simultaneous data transfers can affect Multiroom playback.

Connect the mobile device and app

  1. Connect your smartphone or tablet to the Wi-Fi of the same router that connects the music systems.
  2. Open the sonoro audio App.
  3. Before first use, authorise your mobile device on every participating music system. Follow the authorisation prompts in the app or on the music system.

Control: Your mobile device uses Wi-Fi on the same local network.

Authorise each mobile device separately

Authorisation is required for every smartphone or tablet that will control the music systems. Only authorised systems can be controlled and grouped using that mobile device. After a factory reset of a music system, authorisation must be repeated.

A compatible smart home system must also be on the same local network as the music systems.

Check IP addresses

The music systems obtain their IP addresses automatically via DHCP. You can check the addresses on the music system, in the sonoro audio App or in the router's user interface.

If using fixed IP addresses, ensure the correct subnet is used and each IP address is assigned only once. Duplicate addresses can make devices unreachable or interrupt playback.

Connection problems

A music system does not appear in the group selection

  • Check that the music system is switched on and connected via LAN.
  • Check that the mobile device being used is authorised on this music system.
  • Make sure the mobile device and music systems use the same local network.
  • Check the music systems' IP addresses and available software updates.

Playback cuts out or is uneven

  • Check the network cables. Use Cat 6 or higher.
  • Check that the switch supports Gigabit Ethernet and IGMP snooping is enabled.
  • Temporarily reduce large data transfers on the same network.
  • Check the QoS settings if your router or switch supports this feature.

Once the connections are ready, continue with Create a group.

Network terms

Term Meaning
DHCP A router service that automatically assigns an IP address to devices.
IP address A device's unique address on the network.
LAN The local network. With sonoro Multiroom®, the music systems connect via network cables.
Multicast Data transmission to multiple recipients on the network.
Switch A network device that connects several devices using network cables.
IGMP snooping A switch function that directs multicast data specifically to the required participants.
QoS Quality of Service: A network function that gives priority to data such as audio.
Subnet A section of a network. Devices on the same subnet can generally communicate directly.
